Best Resume Format for Jobs in India

Choose a clear resume format for jobs in India, with practical section order for freshers and experienced professionals plus ATS-friendly formatting advice.

For most roles in India, a clean reverse-chronological resume is the strongest default. It helps recruiters see your most recent work quickly and gives applicant tracking systems a predictable structure to parse.

Recommended format for experienced professionals

Lead with contact details, a concise professional summary, relevant skills, and experience in reverse chronological order. Add education, certifications, and selected projects afterward. Give the most space to recent work that supports the role you want next.

  • Name and professional contact details
  • Professional summary
  • Core skills and tools
  • Professional experience
  • Education and relevant certifications
  • Selected projects or awards when useful

Recommended format for freshers

Freshers can lead with education when it is the strongest qualification, followed by internships, projects, positions of responsibility, technical skills, and relevant achievements. Describe projects like real work: state the goal, your contribution, the tools or methods used, and the result.

A career objective is optional. If included, make it specific to your training and target work instead of using a generic statement about joining a growth-oriented organisation.

Should an Indian resume include a photo or personal details?

For most corporate and technology roles, a photo is not necessary unless the employer or profession specifically asks for one. Avoid adding personal information that is not relevant to your ability to do the job, such as religion, caste, marital status, Aadhaar number, passport number, or full home address.

City and state are usually enough for location. Include a country code with your phone number when applying internationally. Use a professional email address and add a LinkedIn or portfolio link only when it is current and supports your application.

One page or two pages?

One page is a useful target for most freshers and early-career candidates. Two pages are reasonable when an experienced professional has enough relevant evidence to justify the space. Do not shrink text or remove useful context simply to force one page, and do not add filler to reach two.

Formatting details that matter

Use a legible type size, balanced spacing, clear section headings, and consistent dates. Save the final resume as a text-based PDF unless the employer requests another format. Keep the layout restrained enough that a recruiter can scan it quickly on a laptop or phone.

  • Use common section names such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Projects.
  • Write dates consistently, for example “Jun 2023 – Present”.
  • Use Indian English or another variety consistently; do not mix spellings at random.
  • Tailor the summary, skills, and strongest bullets for each role.
  • Proofread names, phone number, links, and employment dates before sending.
